The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Friday, June 26, 2026, urged the public to immediately report any threats of violence, alarming online posts, or suspicious activities through the Unified 911 emergency hotline, following a swift police intervention that prevented a potential security incident in Leyte.
The appeal came after a social media post circulating online raised concern among students, parents, and residents in a Leyte community. Police units conducted validation and intervention measures upon receiving the information, and authorities confirmed that no violent incident occurred.
PNP Chief Warns Against Ignoring Any Threat
PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. stressed that no threat — whether made online or offline — should be dismissed or ignored.
"Ang pinakamahalaga rito ay huwag nating balewalain ang anumang banta o pahiwatig ng karahasan. Kung may makita, mabasa, o marinig na kahina-hinalang usapan o post sa social media, agad itong ireport sa Unified 911 upang maagapan at masuri ng mga awtoridad," said Nartatez.
The PNP chief's statement reinforced an earlier call made by the Secretary of the Interior and Local Government during a press briefing on the same day, emphasizing that prompt reporting enables authorities to act before situations escalate.
Leyte Social Media Post Triggered Police Response
According to the PNP, initial investigation revealed that a social media post had circulated online and alarmed residents, students, and parents in an identified community in Leyte. The post's content was not disclosed, but authorities treated it as a credible concern warranting immediate action.
Police units moved quickly to validate the threat and carry out intervention measures. The PNP confirmed that the timely response ensured public safety and that no violent incident took place.
Nartatez Calls on Parents to Monitor Children Online
Beyond law enforcement response, PNP Chief Nartatez also directed a separate appeal to parents and guardians, urging them to stay actively involved in their children's digital activities.
"Malaki ang papel ng mga magulang sa paggabay sa kanilang mga anak, lalo na sa kanilang social media engagement. Mahalaga ang bukas na komunikasyon sa loob ng tahanan upang maagapan ang anumang impluwensyang maaaring magtulak sa kabataan sa maling direksyon," he said.
The PNP underscored that open communication within the home is one of the most effective preventive tools against online radicalization or harmful influences that may put young people at risk.
Schools, Families, and Communities Share Responsibility
The PNP said schools, families, communities, and government institutions all carry a shared responsibility in maintaining a safe environment for young people. According to the PNP, early reporting, timely intervention, and responsible digital engagement remain among the most effective ways to prevent incidents that endanger lives.
The agency emphasized that no single institution can address the challenge alone, and that coordination across all sectors is essential to public safety.
Initiative Tied to Enhanced Policing Framework
The PNP said the public awareness drive is consistent with its ongoing Enhanced Managing Police Operations framework, which strengthens proactive policing, intelligence monitoring, and rapid response mechanisms nationwide.
It also aligns with the Marcos administration's push for safer communities through closer collaboration between government agencies and the public. The PNP described the initiative as part of its broader vision — Bagong PNP para sa Bagong Pilipinas: Serbisyong Mabilis, Tapat at Nararamdaman.
How to Report: Unified 911 Hotline
The PNP reminded the public that the Unified 911 hotline is available for reporting threats, suspicious online posts, or any activity that may pose a danger to individuals or communities. Authorities encouraged callers not to hesitate, stressing that even unverified concerns should be reported so that proper assessment can be conducted.
The agency said vigilance and timely reporting by ordinary citizens have proven critical in preventing security incidents before they turn violent.
