The Philippine Military Academy (PMA) held its Sports Achievement Awarding Ceremony and Athletic Show 2026 on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at the Fajardo Grandstand in Fort General Gregorio H. del Pilar, Baguio City, recognizing outstanding athletic performance among cadets of the Cadet Corps Armed Forces of the Philippines (CCAFP) across the institution's eight companies.
Baguio City Mayor Benjamin B. Magalong served as Guest of Honor and Speaker during the ceremony, which capped the Intramurals 2025–2026 season. Among the highlights of the event, Echo Company emerged as the overall top-performing company for the academic year after claiming both the Jurado Cup and Streaming championships.
Echo Company Takes Top Honors After Jurado Cup and Streaming Wins
The eight companies of the CCAFP competed across various athletic events throughout the Intramurals 2025–2026 season. Echo Company distinguished itself as the overall champion, securing victories in the two major competitive categories that determine the overall standing — the Jurado Cup and Streaming.
The Jurado Cup is one of the most prestigious athletic competitions within the PMA's annual intramural calendar, while Streaming encompasses a broader series of sporting events and disciplines among the cadet companies. Echo Company's double victory in both categories cemented its position as the dominant athletic unit for the 2025–2026 academic year.
The ceremony served as the formal occasion to confer awards upon cadets and companies that demonstrated excellence in athletic competition, with the recognition extending beyond individual sports performance to include contributions to team discipline and competitive spirit throughout the academic year.
PMA Superintendent Cites Athletics as Central to Leadership Formation
PMA Superintendent Vice Admiral Caesar Bernard N. Valencia, PN, delivered remarks during the ceremony underscoring the role of athletics as an integral part of military training and officer development, not merely as recreational activity or a measure of physical fitness.
Vice Admiral Valencia framed athletic competition as a deliberate training mechanism that builds the qualities necessary for effective military leadership in the field.
"In the profession of arms, athletics is more than competition. It is an essential part of leadership formation. Through sports, cadets develop discipline, courage, decisiveness under pressure, teamwork, and fighting spirit necessary for military service," Vice Admiral Valencia said.
His remarks reinforced the Academy's institutional position that physical and competitive development runs parallel to academic and military training in producing officers capable of leading under pressure. The Superintendent's statement placed athletic achievement within a broader framework of professional readiness rather than treating it as separate from the core mission of cadet formation.
Baguio Mayor Magalong Urges Cadets to Embody Holistic Leadership
Mayor Magalong, who has a distinguished background in law enforcement and public service before assuming the mayorship of Baguio City, echoed Vice Admiral Valencia's sentiments, adding his own perspective on what defines effective leadership in the context of military and public service.
Delivering a portion of his message in Filipino, Mayor Magalong challenged the cadets to recognize that leadership excellence cannot be reduced to intellectual capacity alone, but must be accompanied by physical endurance and moral courage.
"Sa PMA, malinaw na ang pagiging mahusay na lider ay hindi lamang nasusukat sa talino at kaalaman. Ang tunay na lider ay dapat ding may tibay ng katawan, lakas ng loob, at kahandaan sa anumang hamon," Mayor Magalong said.
In translation, the Mayor stated that at the PMA, it is clear that being an effective leader is not measured solely by intelligence and knowledge, and that a true leader must also possess physical endurance, strength of character, and readiness for any challenge.
Mayor Magalong's message aligned with longstanding themes in Philippine military and civil service leadership development, emphasizing the integration of mental, physical, and moral qualities as non-negotiable attributes of officers who will eventually be entrusted with the safety and welfare of personnel and communities.
Athletic Achievement Recognized Alongside Academic and Military Performance
The Sports Achievement Awarding Ceremony forms part of the Academy's broader framework for recognizing cadet excellence across multiple domains. The PMA evaluates and honors cadets not only for academic performance and military proficiency but also for their contributions to physical development and competitive athletics throughout the academic year.
According to the Academy, the conferment of sports awards reflects a deliberate institutional recognition of the role athletics plays in the holistic formation of future military officers. The ceremony underscored the PMA's position that resilience, teamwork, mental toughness, and discipline — qualities honed through competitive sports — are equally essential to the qualities developed through classroom instruction and field training.
The Athletic Show component of the event provided an additional platform for cadets to demonstrate physical fitness, coordination, and unit cohesion, further reinforcing the ceremony's emphasis on the physical dimension of military readiness.
PMA's Intramural Program as a Tool for Officer Readiness
The PMA Intramurals is an annual athletic competition held among the eight companies of the Cadet Corps Armed Forces of the Philippines. The program is designed not only to foster healthy competition and physical conditioning among cadets but also to develop the soft skills of leadership, coordination, and strategic thinking that are directly transferable to military command roles.
The intramural competition structure assigns cadets to their respective companies, which then compete against one another across a range of sporting disciplines throughout the school year. The overall standings — determined through a combination of performance metrics including the Jurado Cup and Streaming — reflect the sustained athletic output and team coordination of each company over an extended period.
The program is consistent with international military academy standards, where physical training and competitive athletics are considered foundational components of leadership development curricula alongside tactical instruction and academic coursework.
Ceremony Held at Fajardo Grandstand Inside Fort Del Pilar
The event was conducted at the Fajardo Grandstand, located within Fort General Gregorio H. del Pilar — the official military reservation of the Philippine Military Academy in Baguio City, Benguet. The grandstand serves as one of the primary venues for major PMA ceremonies and public events throughout the academic calendar.
Baguio City's role as the host city of the PMA has historically made its local government a close partner of the Academy in various civic and institutional activities. Mayor Magalong's participation as Guest of Honor and Speaker at the May 12, 2026 ceremony reflected the continuing institutional relationship between Baguio City Hall and the PMA.
The Sports Achievement Awarding Ceremony and Athletic Show 2026 marks the conclusion of the intramural competition season for the 2025–2026 academic year. With the awarding ceremony now completed, the Academy is expected to continue its regular academic and military training calendar as cadets advance through the various stages of their officer development program at Fort del Pilar.
