The Philippines can expect varied weather conditions today, with scattered rain and thunderstorms impacting several regions, according to the latest forecast from PAGASA. The state weather bureau warns of potential flash floods and landslides in specific areas of Visayas and Mindanao due to a low pressure area (LPA) and its associated rainfall.
National Weather Overview
As of 4:00 AM today, PAGASA reported that a Low Pressure Area (LPA) was estimated to be 120 km Southeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur. This LPA is bringing moderate to at times heavy rains to several regions. Meanwhile, easterlies are affecting Luzon and Visayas, contributing to partly cloudy to cloudy skies in these areas.
Tropical Storm Hagupit is currently outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), located 2,015 km east of Northeastern Mindanao. While not directly affecting the country, PAGASA is monitoring its movement.
Regional Forecasts
Luzon
Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies. Expect isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms, particularly during the afternoon and evening. These are caused by easterlies. While widespread heavy rainfall is not expected, localized heavy downpours during thunderstorms could lead to brief flooding in vulnerable areas.
Visayas
The Visayas region is expected to experience varying weather conditions. Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, and Negros Island Region should brace for cloudy skies with scattered rain and thunderstorms due to the LPA. PAGASA warns of possible flash floods or landslides in these areas due to moderate to, at times, heavy rainfall.
Mindanao
Mindanao will also be affected by the LPA. Caraga, Northern Mindanao, Davao Region, and Zamboanga Peninsula will have cloudy skies with scattered rain and thunderstorms. Residents in these regions should be prepared for potential flash floods or landslides, especially in mountainous or low-lying areas.
Wind and Coastal Conditions
Across the Philippines, PAGASA forecasts light to moderate winds. In Mindanao, winds will be coming from the southeast to northeast. In Central Luzon, Southern Luzon, and Visayas, winds will be from the east to northeast. Northern Luzon will experience winds from the east to southeast.
Coastal waters are expected to be slight to moderate throughout the country, with wave heights ranging from 0.6 to 2.1 meters.
Temperature and Humidity
Yesterday, the maximum temperature recorded at the PAGASA Weather Station in Quezon City was 35.5°C at 2:00 PM. The minimum temperature was 27.5°C at 5:00 AM. Relative humidity ranged from 42% to 74%.
Safety Precautions
Given the forecast for scattered rain and thunderstorms, especially in the Visayas and Mindanao, it is crucial to take necessary precautions:
- Stay Informed: Monitor PAGASA's updates regularly for any changes in the weather situation.
- Avoid Flood-Prone Areas: If you live in or near areas prone to flooding or landslides, be prepared to evacuate if necessary.
- Exercise Caution While Traveling: If you must travel, be aware of potential hazards such as flooded roads or reduced visibility.
- Secure Your Home: Ensure that your home is structurally sound and that drainage systems are clear to prevent water buildup.
- Prepare an Emergency Kit: Have a readily accessible emergency kit containing essential supplies such as food, water, first aid, and a flashlight.
PAGASA Monitoring
PAGASA continues to monitor the LPA and Tropical Storm Hagupit. Any significant changes in the weather pattern will be promptly reported. Stay tuned for updates and heed any warnings issued by local authorities.
