Residents across several municipalities in Quezon province felt light to moderate shaking Tuesday evening when a magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck the region, though no damage is expected from the tremor, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS-DOST) reported.

Earthquake Details

The tectonic earthquake occurred at 6:40 PM Philippine Standard Time on April 15, 2026, originating at a shallow depth of 4 kilometers. PHIVOLCS located the epicenter 23 kilometers north 18 degrees east of Burdeos municipality in Quezon province, at coordinates 15.04°N, 122.04°E.

Reported Shaking Intensities

The earthquake produced varying levels of shaking across the region, with PHIVOLCS recording the strongest effects in northern Quezon municipalities. Intensity III shaking—described as weak but noticeable to many people indoors—was felt in Burdeos and Panukulan in Quezon province.

Intensity II effects, which are typically felt by few people at rest, were reported in the Quezon municipalities of Patnanungan, Jomalig, and Polillo. PHIVOLCS instruments also detected Intensity III levels in General Nakar, Quezon.

The tremor's effects extended beyond Quezon province, with Intensity I shaking—barely perceptible and usually detected only by seismic instruments—recorded in Guinayangan and Infanta in Quezon, as well as in Daet and Jose Panganiban municipalities in neighboring Camarines Norte province.

Damage and Aftershock Assessment

PHIVOLCS stated it expects no damage from this earthquake and no aftershocks to follow. The agency indicated this would be its only bulletin on the event unless additional information becomes available.

Tectonic Origin

The earthquake was classified as tectonic in origin, meaning it resulted from the movement of rock formations beneath the Earth's surface along fault lines, rather than from volcanic activity.

The shallow depth of 4 kilometers contributed to the earthquake being widely felt across the affected areas despite its moderate magnitude.

PHIVOLCS issued its earthquake information bulletin at 7:35 PM on April 15, nearly an hour after the tremor occurred, providing residents with official confirmation and assessment of the seismic event.
