A magnitude 5.1 tectonic earthquake was felt across parts of Mindanao on Tuesday morning, July 28, 2026, with the strongest shaking reported in areas of Davao Oriental, Davao de Oro, Davao del Sur, Surigao del Sur, and Agusan del Sur. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS-DOST) has assessed that no damage is expected, though aftershocks remain possible.

What Happened and Where

The earthquake struck at 7:06:32 AM Philippine Standard Time (PHT) on Tuesday, July 28, 2026. Its epicenter was located 15 kilometers south-southeast of Baganga in Davao Oriental, at coordinates 7.51°N, 126.68°E. PHIVOLCS-DOST recorded the earthquake at a magnitude of Mw 5.1, with a depth of focus of 28 kilometers. The earthquake's origin was tectonic in nature.

PHIVOLCS-DOST issued its bulletin at 8:23 AM PHT on the same day.

Where the Earthquake Was Felt

The earthquake was felt across a wide area of Mindanao, with intensities measured both through public reports and instrumental readings. Intensities are reported using the PHIVOLCS Earthquake Intensity Scale (PEIS).

Intensity III (Felt Shaking — Reported)

The following areas reported Intensity III shaking, described on the PEIS as felt by many people indoors, with hanging objects swinging noticeably:

  • Nabunturan, Davao de Oro
  • City of Digos, Davao del Sur
  • City of Bislig, Surigao del Sur
  • Talacogon, Agusan del Sur

Intensity II (Felt Shaking — Reported)

Intensity II shaking — felt by a few people, particularly those at rest — was reported in the following areas of Davao de Oro:

  • Maco
  • Compostela
  • Montevista
  • Mawab

Intensity I (Felt Shaking — Reported)

Intensity I shaking — scarcely perceptible and detected mainly through instruments — was reported in:

  • City of Tandag, Surigao del Sur

  • Intensity II: City of Digos, Davao del Sur
  • Intensity I: City of Davao; Santa Maria, Davao Occidental; Matanao and Magsaysay, Davao del Sur; Malungon, Sarangani; Tupi, South Cotabato; San Fernando, Bukidnon; City of Kidapawan and Magpet, Cotabato

Damage and Aftershock Assessment

PHIVOLCS-DOST has assessed that this earthquake is not expected to cause damage. However, the agency has noted that aftershocks are possible following this event.
