Event Details
The earthquake had a depth of focus of 91 kilometers and was classified as tectonic in origin. Its epicenter was recorded at coordinates 10.81°N, 125.37°E — approximately 33 kilometers south and slightly west of Balangiga in Eastern Samar. The earthquake was assigned a magnitude of Mw 4.9.
Where the Shaking Was Felt
PHIVOLCS-DOST recorded instrumental intensities across multiple provinces. The strongest shaking — Intensity III on the PHIVOLCS Earthquake Intensity Scale — was measured in Abuyog, Dulag, and Mahaplag in Leyte. At Intensity III, shaking is generally felt indoors, and objects may vibrate noticeably, but it is typically not strong enough to cause structural concern.
Intensity II was recorded in Hinundayan in Southern Leyte and Alangalang in Leyte. At this level, shaking may be felt by people at rest or on upper floors but is considered very slight.
Intensity I — the weakest level on the scale, detectable only by instruments or by very few people under favorable conditions — was recorded in the following areas:
- Baybay and Hilongos, Leyte
- Sogod, Southern Leyte
- Villareal, Samar
- San Francisco, Cebu
- City of Surigao, Surigao del Norte
No Damage or Aftershocks Expected
PHIVOLCS-DOST assessed that the earthquake is not expected to cause damage and that no aftershocks are anticipated. The agency noted that this bulletin is the only one that will be issued for this event unless new information warrants an update.
