Chief Justice Gesmundo was accompanied by his wife, Lynn, and their three children — Alastair, Ashley, and Allison — during the retirement ceremony, the Supreme Court said in its official account of the proceedings.

The SC Program on Awards and Incentives for Service Excellence, the SC Assembly of Lawyer-Employees, Inc., and the SC Employees Association also paid tribute to the chief magistrate during the November 4 flag ceremony program.

Final Flag Ceremony at Padre Faura

A day before his official retirement date, Chief Justice Gesmundo attended his final flag ceremony as a member of the High Court on November 4, 2026, at the Supreme Court courtyard along Padre Faura Street in Manila.

In his farewell message to Supreme Court officials and employees, he expressed deep gratitude to those who served alongside him and shared in his mission of pursuing reforms and modernizing the Philippine Judiciary, according to the Supreme Court Public Information Office.

He recognized the collective efforts and dedication of court personnel in advancing initiatives to modernize the courts and make them more efficient and responsive to the needs of the public.

Pandemic, Public Expectations Among Challenges Cited

In his farewell remarks, Chief Justice Gesmundo looked back on the challenges the Judiciary faced during his term — from navigating a pandemic that demanded changes in its systems and ways of working, to responding to the public's growing expectations and proving the courts' value in the everyday lives of Filipinos.

He noted that the initiatives introduced and implemented over the years reflected the Judiciary's readiness to learn, embrace change, and keep pace with the demands of the times, the Supreme Court said.

Blueprint for Judicial Reform

Among the legacies of Chief Justice Gesmundo's tenure is the Strategic Plan for Judicial Innovations 2022-2027, known as the SPJI — the Supreme Court's blueprint for institutional reforms and modernization anchored on an overarching goal of providing accessible, responsive, and real-time justice.

He spearheaded the development of the SPJI, according to the Supreme Court Public Information Office, and expressed confidence that he would leave behind a Judiciary prepared to build on the foundations he had laid and ready to face future challenges with courage, competence, and compassion.

Acknowledging that much work remains, he said he would cherish not only the reforms implemented during his term but, more importantly, the people whose dedication and contributions made them possible.

Four Decades of Government Service

A law graduate of the Ateneo de Manila University, Chief Justice Gesmundo began his government service at the Office of the Solicitor General after passing the Bar examination in 1984, court records show.

He served on Seconded Appointment as Commissioner of the Presidential Commission on Good Government from 1998 to 2001 before being promoted to Assistant Solicitor General. In 2005, he was appointed to the Sandiganbayan as Associate Justice.

He subsequently served as the 178th Associate Justice of the Supreme Court beginning in 2017, before his appointment as head of the Judiciary on April 5, 2021 — a position he held until his mandatory retirement on November 5, 2026, according to the Supreme Court Public Information Office.
