A Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) E-2D Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft made its first-ever landing in the Philippines on July 2, 2026, touching down at Clark Air Base in Pampanga during a bilateral defense engagement with the Philippine Air Force (PAF).

En Route to Australia for Trilateral Exercise
The JASDF delegation was in transit to Australia to participate in "Southern Cross 26," a Japan–United States–Australia trilateral military exercise, according to the Philippine Air Force. The stop at Clark Air Base served as both a logistical waypoint and an opportunity for structured bilateral engagement.
The E-2D is an advanced carrier-based airborne early warning aircraft capable of detecting and tracking aerial and maritime threats over wide areas, making its presence at Clark a significant moment in Philippine defense history.
Courtesy Call on Air Defense Command Leadership
During the visit, the JASDF delegation paid a courtesy call on the Chief of Command Staff of the Air Defense Command, the Philippine Air Force said. The meeting reaffirmed the defense partnership between the Philippines and Japan at the command level.
Maintenance Knowledge Exchange at Clark
The two air forces conducted a Subject Matter Expert Exchange (SMEE) centered on aircraft maintenance. Specialists from the PAF's 410th Maintenance Wing and the 220th Airlift Wing participated alongside their Japanese counterparts, exchanging professional knowledge, technical expertise, and best practices, according to the Philippine Air Force.
The exchange was designed to strengthen maintenance capabilities on both sides and to foster closer institutional cooperation between the two organizations.
Part of Broader Bilateral Defense Commitment
The Philippine Air Force said the visit reflects the continuing commitment of both air forces to strengthening bilateral defense cooperation through professional military engagements and capacity-building initiatives.
The PAF also noted that the engagement supports sustained collaboration in promoting regional security, stability, and a free and open Indo-Pacific — aligning with the PAF's institutional goal of building a mission-ready, capability-driven, and values-based organization.
