A magnitude 4.8 tectonic earthquake struck near Dalupiri Island in the province of Cagayan on Wednesday afternoon, August 19, 2026. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS-DOST) says no damage and no aftershocks are expected from the event.

What Happened and Where

The earthquake occurred at 12:22:57 PM Philippine Standard Time (PHT) on August 19, 2026. Its epicenter was located 19 kilometers North 20° West of Dalupiri Island (Calayan) in Cagayan, at geographic coordinates 19.27°N, 121.15°E. The earthquake originated at a depth of 26 kilometers and was tectonic in origin.

How Strong Was the Shaking?

PHIVOLCS recorded instrumental intensities at two monitoring stations. Both registered Intensity I on the PHIVOLCS Earthquake Intensity Scale — the lowest level on the scale. At Intensity I, shaking is not perceptible to people; it is detectable only by seismic instruments. The two stations that recorded this level were located in Claveria, Cagayan, and Bacarra, Ilocos Norte.

No public felt reports were included in the PHIVOLCS bulletin.

Damage and Aftershock Assessment

PHIVOLCS-DOST assessed that this earthquake is not expected to cause damage. The agency likewise does not expect aftershocks to follow this event.
