PILAR, BATAAN, April 9, 2026 – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. led the nation in commemorating the 84th Araw ng Kagitingan at the Mt. Samat National Shrine on Thursday, paying tribute to the heroism and sacrifice of Filipino and American forces during World War II's darkest chapter in Philippine history.

The solemn ceremonies at the Dambana ng Kagitingan featured a comprehensive program including wreath-laying ceremonies, the traditional tolling of memorial bells, commemorative tributes, and diplomatic addresses delivered by Japanese Ambassador Endo Kazuya and U.S. Chargé d'Affaires Robert Y. Ewing.

In his keynote address, President Marcos emphasized the enduring relevance of the values demonstrated by Bataan's defenders, highlighting how their courage, dignity, and unwavering love of country continue to serve as guiding principles for contemporary challenges facing the nation.

"The heroes of Bataan gave their all so that we, and the generations that follow, may inherit a nation that is free, sovereign, and worthy of their sacrifice," President Marcos declared during the ceremony.

Defense Secretary Honors International Allies

Earlier in the day's proceedings, Secretary of National Defense Gilberto C. Teodoro Jr. presided over the unveiling of a significant historical marker honoring Czechoslovak nationals who stood alongside Filipino defenders during the Battle of Bataan. The ceremony recognized the often-overlooked international dimension of the Philippine resistance effort.

Secretary Teodoro was joined by a distinguished gathering of government officials, foreign diplomats, surviving war veterans, and youth representatives, creating a multigenerational bridge connecting past sacrifice with present remembrance.

The Czechoslovak marker represents part of ongoing efforts to acknowledge all foreign nationals who contributed to the Philippine defense effort, expanding beyond the traditionally recognized American participation to include European allies who found themselves fighting alongside Filipino forces.

International Diplomatic Participation

The participation of both Japanese Ambassador Endo Kazuya and U.S. Chargé d'Affaires Robert Y. Ewing in delivering commemorative messages underscored the complex historical relationships that have evolved since the war's conclusion. Their joint presence symbolized the transformation of wartime adversaries into modern diplomatic allies.

Ambassador Endo's participation was particularly significant, representing Japan's continued acknowledgment of wartime events and its commitment to peaceful relations with the Philippines. The U.S. diplomatic presence honored the shared sacrifice of American and Filipino forces during the Bataan Death March and subsequent prisoner-of-war experiences.

The diplomatic addresses emphasized themes of reconciliation, shared values, and the importance of maintaining peace through international cooperation and mutual understanding.

Theme Emphasizes Generational Legacy

This year's commemoration operated under the theme "Giting ng Bayani, Pamana sa Salinlahi" (Heroes' Courage, Legacy for Generations), which served as the ceremonial framework for connecting historical sacrifice with contemporary responsibility.

The theme reflects the government's emphasis on ensuring that younger generations understand the significance of the events commemorated at Mt. Samat, particularly the three-month siege that preceded the fall of Bataan and the subsequent Death March that claimed thousands of Filipino and American lives.

Youth representatives participating in the ceremony were specifically included to embody this generational transfer of historical memory and national values, ensuring continuity of remembrance beyond the lives of direct survivors and their immediate families.

Mt. Samat's Historical Significance

The Mt. Samat National Shrine stands as the Philippines' primary memorial to World War II resistance, particularly the events of April 1942 when Filipino and American forces made their final stand against Japanese invasion forces. The site encompasses both the memorial shrine and the Dambana ng Kagitingan, which serves as the focal point for annual Araw ng Kagitingan observances.

The shrine complex includes various monuments, markers, and memorial walls that chronicle the broader Pacific War experience, from the initial Japanese landings through the eventual liberation of the Philippines. The facility serves both as a tourist destination and an educational center for understanding Philippine participation in World War II.

Beyond its role in annual commemorations, Mt. Samat functions as a research center and repository for documents, artifacts, and testimonies related to the war period, supporting ongoing historical scholarship and public education initiatives.

Continuing National Remembrance Efforts

The Araw ng Kagitingan observance represents part of broader national efforts to maintain historical memory of World War II experiences, particularly as the generation of direct survivors continues to diminish. Government initiatives increasingly focus on documentation, education, and memorial preservation to ensure continued public awareness.

President Marcos's remarks emphasized that remembering historical sacrifice serves not merely as ceremonial obligation but as practical preparation for addressing contemporary national challenges with the same courage and determination demonstrated by Bataan's defenders.

The ceremony's conclusion reaffirmed the nation's commitment to upholding the Republic that emerged from wartime sacrifice, with participants pledging continued vigilance in protecting the sovereignty and freedom secured through such tremendous cost.
