An aftershock of magnitude 4.6 was felt across multiple provinces in Mindanao at 7:22 PM on Monday, June 8, 2026, according to Earthquake Information No. 1 issued by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS-DOST) at 7:34 PM Philippine Standard Time (PHT). The state seismology agency does not expect the event to cause damage.
What Happened and Where
The earthquake originated approximately 22 kilometers south-southwest of Balut Island in the Municipality of Sarangani, Davao Occidental, with recorded coordinates of 5.31°N, 125.25°E. PHIVOLCS classified it as tectonic in origin, with a focal depth of 55 kilometers. The surface-wave magnitude was recorded at Ms 4.6.
PHIVOLCS confirmed that this earthquake is an aftershock of the Mw7.8 Offshore Sarangani earthquake that also struck on June 8, 2026.
Where Shaking Was Felt
Shaking was measured instrumentally by PHIVOLCS across several provinces. The intensities reported are based on the PHIVOLCS Earthquake Intensity Scale (PEIS):
Intensity IV — felt in T'Boli, South Cotabato. At this level, shaking is felt by many people indoors, with hanging objects swinging noticeably.
Intensity III — recorded in Tupi, South Cotabato; Bagumbayan, Sultan Kudarat; Maitum, Sarangani; and Sta. Maria, Davao Occidental. At Intensity III, the earthquake is felt by several people indoors, with slight vibration similar to a passing vehicle.
Intensity II — recorded in Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat; Banga, Santo Niño, Surallah, and Tampakan, South Cotabato; and Digos City, Matanao, and Magsaysay, Davao del Sur. Intensity II is felt by a few people at rest, especially on upper floors.
Intensity I — recorded in Columbio and President Quirino, Sultan Kudarat. Intensity I is scarcely perceptible except under favorable conditions.
Damage and Aftershock Assessment
PHIVOLCS-DOST stated that this earthquake is not expected to cause damage and that no further aftershocks are anticipated from this specific event. PHIVOLCS noted that this will be the only bulletin issued for this earthquake unless additional information becomes available.
