ISABELA CITY, Basilan — Defense Secretary Gilberto C. Teodoro, Jr. on Wednesday directed the military and concerned security and law enforcement agencies to further consolidate their operations against lawless elements and the illegal drug trade in Basilan, following a recent ambush on a military convoy in Tipo-Tipo.

Teodoro issued the directive during a security briefing held at the 1101st Infantry Brigade Headquarters, Camp Luis Biel II, in Isabela City, Basilan, on October 6, 2026.

Ambush Triggers High-Level Security Review

The Tipo-Tipo ambush — which targeted a military convoy and resulted in soldiers being wounded — prompted the Defense Chief's visit to the 1101st Infantry Brigade and a high-level briefing with senior military commanders.

The briefing was attended by Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff General Antonio Nafarrete, along with the leadership of the 11th Infantry Division and the Western Mindanao Command, according to the Department of National Defense.

Drug Trade Framed as National Security Threat

During the briefing, Secretary Teodoro emphasized that the illegal drug trade is not merely a law enforcement concern but a broader national security issue, given the resources criminal networks utilize to sustain illicit activities.

The Defense Secretary directed concerned officials to explore measures that would improve operational and administrative synergy, including closer coordination among agencies within their respective regions.

Operations Must Align With Bangsamoro Peace Process

Teodoro also stressed that law enforcement operations in the region must remain aligned with the Bangsamoro peace process and ongoing decommissioning efforts, according to the DND.

The directive underscores the government's intent to pursue security objectives without undermining the peace framework established in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

Wounded Soldiers Visited, Medals Conferred in Zamboanga

Following the security briefing, Secretary Teodoro, accompanied by AFP officials, traveled to Camp Navarro General Hospital in Zamboanga City to visit soldiers wounded in the Tipo-Tipo ambush.

The Defense Chief personally checked on the condition of the recovering troops and extended his support to them. He also conferred the Wounded Personnel Medal on the soldiers in recognition of their service and sacrifice, the DND reported.

Why This Matters

The Tipo-Tipo ambush and the Defense Secretary's subsequent directive highlight the persistent security threats facing Basilan, where armed lawless elements and the illegal drug trade continue to pose challenges to both military operations and civilian safety. Teodoro's directive to unify security and law enforcement efforts signals a coordinated national-level response to destabilization in the province. The requirement to keep operations aligned with the Bangsamoro peace process reflects the delicate balance the government must maintain between security action and the region's ongoing peace and decommissioning agenda.
