CEBU CITY — The Environmental Management Bureau in Central Visayas (DENR-EMB 7) issued a warning on March 30, 2026, cautioning the public against attempting to extract fuel from PET bottles using do-it-yourself (DIY) methods involving heating or burning. This warning comes in response to the proliferation of viral videos on social media demonstrating this practice.

The agency emphasizes that these methods are dangerous and can release harmful substances, specifically polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs). These chemicals are known carcinogens and pose significant health hazards when plastics are heated without proper controls.

Dangers of Uncontrolled Pyrolysis Processes

According to DENR-EMB 7, while pyrolysis is a legitimate waste-to-energy technology in some countries, it requires stringent conditions to be safe. These include controlled temperatures between 800 and 1,200 degrees Celsius and the use of air pollution control devices. The DIY methods circulating online lack these critical safety measures.

The bureau stressed that these uncontrolled processes do not eliminate the formation of PCDDs and PCDFs. Furthermore, without air pollution control devices, the pollutants released during these DIY extractions pose substantial risks to both human health and the environment.
