The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the United States Pacific Command (USPACOM) successfully completed the 16th Bilateral Maritime Cooperative Activity (MCA) in the West Philippine Sea on October 14, 2026, reinforcing joint maritime readiness and operational coordination between the two allied nations.
The one-day exercise brought together Philippine Navy, Philippine Coast Guard, and United States Navy assets, conducting a series of coordinated maritime activities aimed at strengthening interoperability between the two forces.
Vessels and Assets Deployed
According to the AFP, the Philippines deployed the Philippine Navy's BRP Miguel Malvar (FFG-06), accompanied by an AW109 helicopter, and the Philippine Coast Guard vessel BRP Melchora Aquino (MRRV-9702).
The United States contributed the USS Warrior (MCM-10), a mine countermeasures vessel, to the exercise. Participating units conducted Passing Honors and a Photo Exercise as part of the day's activities.
Alliance Commitment Reaffirmed
In a press release issued from Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City, the AFP said the 16th MCA iteration "underscores the Philippines' and the United States' continued commitment to strengthening defense cooperation, enhancing maritime capabilities, and supporting a free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific."
By the Numbers
- 16th — iteration of the Bilateral Maritime Cooperative Activity
- 3 — naval and coast guard vessels deployed across both nations
- 1 — AW109 helicopter deployed alongside BRP Miguel Malvar
- October 14, 2026 — date the activity was conducted in the West Philippine Sea
Why This Matters
The continued conduct of the Bilateral Maritime Cooperative Activity series reflects the defense partnership between the Philippines and the United States. The exercise directly advances both nations' stated goal of maintaining a free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific. As the MCA reaches its 16th iteration, the regularity of these joint operations signals sustained bilateral commitment to maritime security coordination in the West Philippine Sea.
